The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) on Wednesday urged the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, to assume control of security operations during this weekend’s governorship election in Edo State.

HURIWA National Coordinator Emmanuel Onwubiko, made the call at a press conference in Abuja.

He emphasised that non-partisan oversight is important to ensure a peaceful and fair election.

He expressed doubt about police neutrality in the election, alleging that the Commissioner of Police in Edo State is biased towards the All Progressives Congress (APC).

He claimed that the recent arrests of Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP) leaders indicate a pattern of intimidation aimed at undermining the opposition.

“We are calling on the NSA to take immediate and direct control of security operations for the Edo 2024 elections.

“Given the compromised state of the Edo Police Command and the allegations surrounding its leadership, a non-partisan body must take charge to prevent any form of manipulation or undue influence. The Nigerian people deserve an election that is free from fear, coercion, or intimidation,” Onwubiko said.

Onwubiko also slammed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for retaining the Resident Electoral Commissioner, Anugbum Onuoha, citing his close ties to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

He said the ties could compromise the election’s neutrality.

He contended that Onuoha’s previous service under Wike raises serious questions about his ability to oversee a fair electoral process.

The group also called for INEC to reconsider its decision on the matter.

“We urge INEC to reconsider its stance on this matter. The refusal to redeploy Onuoha raises serious questions about the commission’s commitment to conducting a credible election in Edo State. INEC’s reputation is on the line, and the Nigerian people deserve an election that is transparent and free of external influences.

“We urge the USA and UK governments to take decisive action by imposing visa bans on any person or group attempting to compromise this election. International pressure is vital to ensuring accountability and upholding democratic principles.

“Edo State is at a crossroads, and the upcoming election will determine the future of its governance. We must not allow any form of compromise or malpractice to mar this critical process.

“We call on the international community to stand with the people of Edo and ensure that their right to vote is protected, ” he added.
