Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar on Monday launched a scathing attack on President Bola Tinubu’s administration, saying the emblem on the president’s cap has become a symbol of oppression.

In a statement titled: “De-cap-itated!,” issued by his Special Assistant on Communications, Phrank Shaibu, the former Vice President said Tinubu has failed Nigerians, including his own supporters, after one year in office.

He recalled Tinubu’s pre-election claim that the cap design represented a “broken shackle,” symbolizing his promise to liberate Nigerians from poverty and oppression.

Atiku, however, noted that the president has yet to break the chains of poverty while the cap has become a burden for merchants selling it and a symbol of embarrassment for the president’s supporters.

He said: “During the campaign, these caps symbolized Tinubu’s promise to protect human rights, boost the economy, and replicate Lagos’s success across Nigeria. However, the reality is far from it.

“The once-eager vendors who proudly displayed the Emilokan caps at bustling traffic lights and strategic street corners now find themselves burdened by them. Once a sought-after item, the caps have become an embarrassing relic for many of Tinubu’s supporters, representing broken promises and a political regime that has shifted towards authoritarianism.”

He stressed that the disappointment with Tinubu’s administration extends beyond the political sphere, highlighting the widespread discontent among Nigerians.

“The emblem on Tinubu’s cap has become a symbol of oppression, a reminder of the failed promises and unfulfilled expectations,” the ex-VP concluded.
