President Bola Tinubu on Monday sworn in Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun as the 23rd substantive Chief Justice of Nigeria, marking a significant milestone in the country’s judicial history.

This ceremony held in Abuja followed Kekere-Ekun’s confirmation by the Senate on September 25.

The new CJN took the oath of office and signed the oath register at the Council Chamber of the State House in Abuja surrounded by dignitaries, including three of her predecessors – Justice Aloma Mukhtar, the first female Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Mahmud Mohammed, and Justice Walter Onnoghen.

Her immediate past predecessor, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, who retired on August 22 after reaching the age of 70, was also in attendance.

“This is a momentous occasion for our nation’s judiciary,” President Tinubu said during the ceremony.

“Justice Kekere-Ekun’s wealth of experience and exceptional leadership qualities make her an outstanding choice for this position.”
