The Nigerian Presidency has swiftly responded to Catholic Bishop of Sokoto, Matthew Kukah’s assertion that President Bola Tinubu refused to sign the peace accord during the 2023 presidential election.

Kukah made this statement on Sunday at the Edo election security town hall meeting in Benin, sparking controversy.

“What is also very interesting is that the current president, when he was a presidential candidate, did not sign. It wasn’t our fault that the political opposition didn’t take advantage of it,” Kukah said.

However, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, promptly contradicted Kukah’s claim via his X handle on Tuesday.

“Contrary to the claims by Bishop Kukah, President Tinubu signed the two peace accords preceding his election in 2023,” Onanuga stated.

According to Onanuga, the first peace accord, which committed candidates to a free and credible election, was signed on September 29, 2022.

Notably, Vice President Kashim Shettima represented Tinubu at the signing. The second agreement, signed on February 23, 2023, focused on accepting the election outcome, and Tinubu personally signed it

Ahead of the February 25 presidential election, candidates gathered at Abuja’s International Conference Centre to sign the peace pact.

Prominent attendees included Labour Party’s Peter Obi, Peoples Democratic Party’s Atiku Abubakar, New Nigeria Peoples Party’s Rabiu Kwankwaso, and African Action Congress’s Omoyele Sowore.

Although Tinubu was abroad in the UK at the time of the first signing, he was present for the second accord.
