The Police Service Commission (PSC) has announced the abolition of special promotions in a significant move aimed at promoting merit and transparency in the Nigeria Police Force.

The decision was made public by the PSC Chairman, DIG Hashimu Argungu (retd.), during a meeting with the Association of Retired Police Officers of Nigeria in Abuja on Tuesday.

According to Argungu, the commission will no longer serve as a rubber stamp for irregular promotions, emphasizing that merit, based on passing prescribed examinations and meeting basic requirements, will now be the sole criteria for promotions.

“The Chairman of the Police Service Commission has announced that special promotions are henceforth abolished in the Nigeria Police Force. Merit, based on the passing of the prescribed examination and other basic requirements, will now count on the promotion of officers and men of the Nigeria Police Force,” said Ikechukwu Ani, PSC Head of Press and Public Relations, in a statement.

Argungu stressed that special promotions are unheard of globally and that the commission under his leadership will not encourage such practices, noting, that the law allows for accelerated promotions for exceptional officers but emphasized that this will be done judiciously to prevent abuse.

The PSC Chairman further explained that promotions will now be based on merit, written examinations, and interviews, rendering seniority irrelevant in modern policing.

“Any officer who fails the promotion examination will remain on the same rank, and if he fails three times, he will be retired at that level for incompetence,” Argungu said.

This move is seen as a significant step towards reforming the Nigeria Police Force and promoting a culture of meritocracy and transparency. By abolishing special promotions, the PSC aims to ensure that promotions are based on individual performance and merit, rather than favoritism or connections.
