The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has taken a significant leap in its fight against insecurity with the addition of 12 new aircraft to its fleet.

This development was announced by the Chief of Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Hassan Abubakar, during a graduation ceremony for 432 officers and airmen/airwomen at the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) in Kaduna, on Wednesday.

According to Air Marshal Abubakar, the new aircraft include four Diamond 62 surveillance aircraft, two King Air 360 light transport aircraft, four T-129 ATAK helicopters, and two AW109 Trekkers. This acquisition is part of the NAF’s efforts to enhance its capabilities in combating terrorism and insurgency.

“The recent dislodgement of enemy camps is a sign of progress in our fight against insurgents,” Air Marshal Abubakar stated, reiterating President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to ensuring national security. “The newly acquired aircraft will play a crucial role in achieving this goal.”

    Future Acquisitions and Upgrades

The NAF has also announced plans to acquire additional aircraft, including three CASA-295 medium airlift/surveillance aircraft, 10 AW109 Trekkers, 12 AH-1Z attack helicopters, and 24 M-346 attack aircraft. This will bring the total number of new aircraft to 50 between December 2024 and 2026.

Air Marshal Abubakar emphasized the importance of technological advancements and predictive maintenance efforts in maintaining 95% aircraft serviceability. He also highlighted the NAF’s focus on indigenous military manufacturing through research and development.

The CAS urged the graduating officers and airmen/airwomen to apply their technical knowledge in real-world scenarios, ensuring the safety and airworthiness of the new aircraft. “Your expertise will be crucial in defeating terrorism and insurgency, aligning with President Tinubu’s renewed hope agenda.”

The NAF’s fleet expansion and modernization efforts are a testament to its commitment to enhancing national security. With these new additions, the NAF is better equipped to tackle the challenges posed by insecurity and terrorism in Nigeria.

    NAF’s Existing Fleet and Capabilities

The Nigerian Air Force already operates a range of aircraft, including the JF-17 Thunder, A-29 Super Tucano, and Alpha Jet. These aircraft have played a significant role in the NAF’s counterinsurgency operations against Boko Haram and other militant groups.
