The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Kano State Command on Wednesday, issued a statement to correct reports circulating in the media that 20 chairmanship candidates tested positive for drugs in the state.

According to the Assistant Superintendent of Narcotics Public Relations Officer, Sadiq Maigatari, the agency was misquoted in the reports.

“Contrary to reports, the NDLEA did not state that 20 chairmanship candidates tested positive for drugs,” Maigatari said in the statement. “While it is true that 20 candidates have tested positive for drugs, this number is not specific to any particular seat or political party.”

The agency explained that candidates are presenting themselves for the drug integrity test on an individual basis, without indication of the position they are aspiring for or the political party they belong to.

“To this extent, the NDLEA cannot explicitly determine who is contesting for Chairmanship or Councilorship positions,” the statement added.

The NDLEA urged the public to await the official release of the test results at the end of the screening exercise, assuring that the agency is committed to transparency and accuracy in the electoral process.

“We want to ensure that the public has accurate information and avoids speculation or misinformation,” Maigatari said. “We will release the official results at the appropriate time, and we ask for the public’s patience and understanding.”
