The Lagos State Government has officially reopened the Ojota and Maryland sections of the Odo Iya-Alaro Bridge, marking a significant milestone in the state’s infrastructure development.

During the reopening ceremony, Deputy Governor Dr. Obafemi Hamzat declared a zero-tolerance policy for vandalism and theft of public infrastructure.

Hamzat emphasized the importance of maintaining infrastructure, stating, “Everybody is saying that maintenance of infrastructure is a challenge, but in Lagos, we are saying it is not.”

He highlighted the repairs made to the bridge’s expansion joints and the replacement of stolen manhole covers with fibre materials.

The switch to fibre materials is a strategic move to combat theft, as Hamzat explained, “These new manhole covers are fibres, not metals… If you take it, it is useless.”

He stressed that manhole covers serve a critical safety purpose, protecting people from falling off bridges.

The Lagos State Government has demonstrated its commitment to improving infrastructure, with a focus on road and bridge development to reduce travel time and alleviate traffic congestion.

As Hamzat noted, “We are focused on road and bridge infrastructure to reduce travel time, saving important hours that would have otherwise been lost to traffic.”
