Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, the acting Chief Justice of Nigeria, on Wednesday, made a bold statement during her Senate screening for confirmation as the substantive CJN, vowing to terminate all pre-election matters at the Court of Appeal.

This move is seen as a significant step towards ensuring electoral integrity and preventing manipulation.

“All pre-election matters will terminate at the Court of Appeal. I have zero tolerance for corruption,” Justice Kekere-Ekun declared.

This is particularly crucial, given Nigeria’s history of electoral disputes and the need for a fair and impartial judiciary.
In a related development, the Senate on Wednesday confirmed the appointment of Justice Kekere-Ekun as substantive Chief Justice of Nigeria after her screening.

The development comes after President Bola Tinubu wrote the Senate on Tuesday, seeking her confirmation as the CJN.

Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, read Tinubu’s letter during plenary on Tuesday.

Senate President Akpabio then referred the nomination to the Committee of the Whole for deliberation on the next legislative sitting.

The National Judicial Council (NJC) in August recommended Justice Kekere-Ekun to President Tinubu as successor to the former CJN, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola.

The 66-year-old jurist has been serving as the Acting CJN since Justice Ariwoola retired last month.

Kekere-Ekun is the 23rd Chief Justice of Nigeria and second Nigeria female jurist to serve in that position.

The first female to occupy the seat was Justice Aloma Mariam Mukhtar, who was the CJN between July 2012 and November 2014.
