    Floods claim 68 lives across Kano, Jigawa states

    Since the onset of the rainy season in July, floods have resulted in the deaths of at least 68 people in Kano and Jigawa states.

    Isyaku Kubarachi, Executive Secretary of the Kano State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), reported that 31 fatalities have been recorded in Kano.

    He added that the flood has impacted approximately 156 communities across 21 local government areas, causing injuries to 135 individuals. The disaster also led to the destruction of 5,280 homes, affecting 31,818 people, with 313 displaced.

    In a related update, Dr. Haruna Mairiga, Executive Secretary of the Jigawa State Emergency Management Agency, confirmed in a phone interview with reporters that the death toll in Jigawa has risen to 37.

    He noted that the floods have displaced 15,000 people and destroyed 12,000 hectares of cultivated farmland. The flooding has affected 17 out of the state’s 27 local government areas.

    Dr. Mairiga remarked, “We started experiencing flooding since July and we are not yet in the middle of the rainy season. We have recorded flooding in 17 out of 27 LGAs in Jigawa State. The death toll has reached 37, with 15,000 people displaced and currently taking refuge in schools where the government has provided mats and blankets. Similarly, 12,000 hectares of farmland awaiting harvest were washed away.”
