The Department of State Services (DSS) plans to reduce its media presence and enhance its covert operations for better intelligence gathering and national security, according to the agency’s new Director General, Adeola Oluwatosin Ajayi.

Ajayi, who was appointed by President Bola Tinubu on August 26, 2024, and began his role on August 28, 2024, outlined these changes during a press conference on Wednesday.

Ajayi emphasized that the DSS should focus on its core mission of covert operations to fortify national security, rather than prioritizing public visibility.

“The security agency needs to concentrate on its core mandate of covert operations so as to strengthen national security than being seen and heard,” Ajayi said.

In line with this new approach, the agency’s Director of Public Relations and Strategic Communications, Dr. Peter Afunanya, has been redeployed, though his new position has not yet been disclosed. A replacement for Dr. Afunanya has not been announced.

At the press briefing, Dr. Afunanya assured journalists that the DSS remains committed to providing accurate and relevant information to the public as needed.

“What this means is that the DSS will continue to relate and engage with Nigerians through the media whenever the need arises. It does not mean that we want to operate in the dark or hide the truth from them,” he explained.

“We will continue to engage with the Nigerian people whenever the need arises. But we want to stick to our core mandate of covert operation to promote national security and safety of Nigerians,” said the outgoing PRO.
