The Conference of Nigeria Political Parties (CNPP) has issued a stern warning to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure a neutral and transparent electoral process in the Edo State Governorship Election.

In a statement signed by its Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Comrade James Ezema, the CNPP emphasized that INEC must remain impartial during the collation of results, as Edo State citizens have already exercised their right to vote.

The CNPP expressed concern about the potential manipulation of results by a prominent political party, stressing that INEC should safeguard the trust of Nigerians by prioritizing the integrity of the process. They warned against undermining democracy in the state, emphasizing that INEC must not allow itself to be used to scuttle democracy in Edo State under any circumstances.

“We are worried about the feelers we are getting from Edo State, which confirm a deliberate ploy by one of the big parties to change the results and figures already on the INEC Portal,” Comrade Ezema said. “Mr. President must call them to order. INEC must not allow itself to be used to scuttle democracy in Edo State under any circumstances.”

The CNPP also stressed the importance of INEC demonstrating its commitment to conducting credible elections, particularly in the wake of the questionable 2023 general elections. They called on all stakeholders, including political parties, candidates, and security agencies, to prioritize peace and decorum during the collation process.

“Let us work together to strengthen Nigeria’s democracy by allowing citizens to freely choose their leaders,” Comrade Ezema said. “We call on INEC to ensure that the results of the election reflect the true will of the people of Edo State.”

As the election results are being announced, INEC has commenced the release of the results from the 2024 Edo State governorship election, with updates provided in real-time. The CNPP’s call to action comes as Nigerians watch closely to see if INEC will deliver on its promise of free, fair
