The Benue State Government has issued a warning about a significant increase in snake infestations in several Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps across the state.
James Iorpuu, Executive Secretary of the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), highlighted the issue during the distribution of relief supplies to IDPs on Wednesday.
He reported that recently, 15 displaced individuals have required medical treatment for snake bites, with the cost of these treatments amounting to millions of naira.
Iorpuu stated, “In recent months, Benue-SEMA has faced the tragic challenge of snake bites among our IDP populations. I am pleased to report that we have successfully treated over 15 cases across various camps, thanks to the swift action of our health teams and the support from our partners.”

To mitigate the risk of further incidents, Iorpuu mentioned that all IDP camps, including the Ikyogen camp, have been fumigated. He urged both local and international partners to continue their support in addressing the issue of snake bites.
Additionally, Iorpuu announced that the World Bank, one of their partners, will soon begin the construction of 50 shelter units in Nyihemba, Kwande Local Government Area. He also revealed that SEMA plans to initiate IDP farm projects in Kwande, Logo, and Gwer-West local government areas in the near future.
