    Nigerian Musician Killed by Police Operative, Sparks Outcry for Justice

    Okezie Mba, a Nigerian singer, was fatally shot by a police officer in Enugu State, Nigeria’s south-east.

    Mr. Mba, sometimes known as Igbo-Jah, is a prominent Ogene musician.

    According to reports, Mr Mba was attending an event on Friday at the Enugu State Police Command’s anti-cult section when several police officers began shooting indiscriminately.

    “Igbo-Jah was then struck by a bullet.” They attempted to rush him to a neighboring hospital, but he died on the way,” the person claimed.

    Police in Enugu State have confirmed the development.

    In a statement issued on Saturday, Enugu State police spokesperson Daniel Ndukwe claimed the operator had been caught and imprisoned for the musician’s murder.

    Mr. Ndukwe, a deputy superintendent of police, did not provide the identity of the operative.

    The spokesperson simply stated that the operator is a male inspector with the police’s Anti-Cultism Tactical Squad in Enugu state.

    How it happened.

    “The musician was reportedly leaving the Squad’s headquarters after a friendly visit when, for reasons yet to be ascertained, the police officer fired his rifle, hitting the victim,” Mr. Ndukwe added.

    “He (Mba) was transported to the hospital, where he was declared dead by the attending physician. His remains has been placed in the mortuary for preservation and autopsy.

    Mr Ndukwe stated that the Commissioner of Police in Enugu State, Kanayo Uzuegbu, has directed the State Criminal Investigation Department’s deputy commissioner to probe the event.

    Mr Uzuegbu asked the deputy commissioner of police to take “appropriate disciplinary actions” against the police inspector.

    He expressed his condolences to the musician’s family, calling his death “unfortunate and unacceptable.”

    The police commissioner pledged that the police inspector and anybody else found guilty will be punished in accordance with the law as a deterrent.

    He advised the dead musician’s family and friends to be calm and cooperate with the authorities so that justice might be done.
