The Kwara Government has sealed 14 buildings due to environmental concerns, as announced by the state’s Commissioner for Environment, Hajia Nafisat Musa-Buge, on Thursday.

Speaking to reporters in Ilorin, Musa-Buge explained that the action was taken in response to the dirty environments surrounding these buildings, which were believed to harm the community.

“This is necessary to reiterate the government’s commitment to sustaining a hygienic and safe environment,” she stated.

On Wednesday, officials sealed off eight buildings in the Sabo-Oke area of Ilorin South Local Government, while last week, six buildings were sealed on Onikun-Kewu Street in the Adabata area.

Musa-Buge highlighted that these buildings violated state environmental laws, and the closures were aimed at preventing outbreaks of cholera and other diseases. She emphasized the administration’s dedication to ensuring a clean and safe environment for both residents and potential investors.

“It is no longer news that Environmental Health Officers across the 16 LGAs have begun the enforcement of environmental laws,” she noted. “This is especially through house-to-house inspections of toilet facilities to sustain the healthy living of residents. This initiative has already started yielding positive results.”

Despite ongoing advocacy for the cessation of open defecation and the construction of standard toilets, Musa-Buge pointed out that some properties still expose human waste to the environment due to faulty soak-aways. “But this practice is dangerous to the living conditions of the residents in these areas,” she remarked.

The Commissioner assured the public of continued house-to-house inspections to assess compliance and enforce environmental laws. She urged residents to support the administration’s efforts to promote a clean and safe living environment for all. Additionally, she called on landlords to build proper toilet facilities, warning that those who fail to comply would face prosecution.
