At least 18 persons were burnt to death in an auto crash along the Ijebu-Ode/Benin expressway on Monday.

The Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE) spokesman in Ogun State, Babatunde Akinbiyi, disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday in Abeokuta.

He said a white Toyota Hiace bus was involved in the accident which occurred at about 4:00 p.m., on the highway.

The spokesman added that the driver of the bus was critically injured in the accident.

The statement read: “The cause of the crash according to eyewitness account which the driver corroborated was that there was keg full of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) inside the bus which fell on its side when the vehicle got to a failed portion of the road.

“The PMS poured on the bus floor and later dropped on the exhaust pipe and caused the vehicle to catch fire on transit.”

“The injured driver had been taken to Rona Hospital for medical care while the corpses of the dead passengers were deposited at the State Hospital, Ijebu Ode.”
