    Okonjo-Iweala to vie for second term as WTO DG

    The Director-General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, will seek a second four-year term in office next year.

    The Nigerian ex-finance minister’s tenure expires in August 2025.

    Okonjo-Iweala, the first woman and African to head the WTO, was chosen by member countries of the Geneva, Switzerland-based organisation on February 15, 2021.

    The 70-year-old assumed office in March of the same year.

    Okonjo-Iweala’s spokesman, Ismaila Dieng, confirmed the development in a statement on Monday.

    He said his principal had taken into account “the overwhelming and broad-based support expressed by WTO’s 166 members.

    The spokesman added that Okonjo-Iweala’s decision to seek another term has been officially communicated to WTO chairman, Amb. Petter Olberg from Norway.

    “We can confirm that Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has officially announced her intention to seek a second term as Director-General of the WTO,” the statement read.
