At least four persons have been confirmed dead in a cholera outbreak in Yola-North Local Government Area of Adamawa State.

The Chairman of the council, Jibrin Ibrahim, disclosed this during a visit to the victims at the Infectious Disease Centre in Yola on Sunday.

He said the outbreak was recorded in the Alkalawa, Ajiya, and Limawa wards in the area.

The chairman added that 36 others are currently receiving treatment in various hospitals in the area.

Ibrahim said: “The situation is dire, with over 40 cases reported, and unfortunately, four lives have been lost.

“However, I am pleased to report that a significant number of victims have been stabilized and are receiving medical attention from our dedicated health workers.”

The chairman commended the swift response of health workers, the Red Cross, and international partners in containing the outbreak.

He attributed the suspected outbreak to contaminated water resulting from flooding in some areas.

“We urge the public to maintain a clean environment, drink potable water, and ensure they wash vegetables and fruits before consumption,” Ibrahim appealed.

The latest outbreak brought the total number of suspected cholera cases in Nigeria to 7,663 in 280 LGAs across 35 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) this year, according to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).
