The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has condemned the latest increase in the pump price of petrol to about N1,000 in various parts of the country.

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited on Tuesday increased the price of the product across its retail outlets from 568 to ₦885 per litre.

This followed a denial by the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Heineken Lokpobiri, that the Federal Government had approved an increase in fuel prices.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) have also condemned the fuel price hike and demanded its immediate reversal.

In a statement issued on Thursday by its National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, the party described the hike in fuel price as thoughtless, especially at this time.

The PDP advised President Bola Tinubu to save the country from further socio-economic challenges by immediately reversing the latest increase in fuel price.

The party described the action as anti-people and a show of unconcern for the agonies of millions of Nigerians who could no longer afford their daily meals, medications and basic support for families due to the high cost of living.

The statement read: “Most Nigerians now live below the poverty line, businesses are collapsing daily as the Naira now exchanged for over N1,600 to a dollar with over 34 percent inflation rate.

“Our party restates that with a deft, transparent and innovative management of resources and national refining capacity, petrol should not sell more than N250 per litre in Nigeria.”
