At least 17 were killed in a mass shooting in a remote South African town on Friday night.

Police told journalists on Saturday the attackers targeted two homesteads in the town of Lusikisiki in the Eastern Cape.

The victims, according to reports, were preparing to attend a funeral ceremony of a woman and her daughter who were murdered last year when the attackers struck.

13 people, including 12 women were killed in one location and four others in the second location.

Another victim is in critical condition in hospital.

However, the reason for the deadly attack has not been ascertained.
