The President of Dangote Group, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, says he may no longer have the interest in buying English Premiership football club Arsenal.

He expressed his regret for not buying Arsenal when the team was valued at around $2 billion, noting that he now has businesses that require his money more.

The erstwhile richest man in Africa had always wanted to own the English Premier League club as his support for the club had not been a secret.

Dangote shared in a brief interview with Bloomberg on why he did not move forward with purchasing the club as previously planned.

With Arsenal valued at around $4billoon now, when asked if he now regrets not buying the club earlier, Dangote’s response sheds light on his current stance.

“That time has passed (to buy the club). The last time we had this interview I told you that as soon as I finish with the refinery I was going to try and buy Arsenal but the issue is that everything has gone up,” said the Billionaire businessman.

“The club is currently doing very well. Arsenal is doing extremely well. That time, Arsenal wasn’t doing well. I think I don’t have that kind of excess liquidity to go and buy a club for 4 billion dollars.

“I would rather do something with the money. What I will do is that I will continue to be the biggest fan of Arsenal, I’ll watch their games any time they’re playing.

“So, I will remain a major supporter of Arsenal. But I don’t think if it makes sense today to buy Arsenal.

“Actually I regret not buying it before, but, you know, my money was more needed in completing my project (the refinery in Nigeria) than buying Arsenal.

“I would have bought the club when it was valued at 2 billion dollars but I wouldn’t have been able to finish my project. So we had to go and complete the refinery of which a lot of people did not believe it was possible.”
