The United Nations Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, has strongly condemned the terrorist attack in Mali.

Armed men on Tuesday attacked a gendarmerie complex in Bamako, the country’s capital where more than 70 people were killed and over 200 others were wounded.

However, in a statement a few hours later, the Malian Ministry of Security and Civil Protection assured that the situation was under control.

In a statement issued by his spokesman, Stephane Dujarric, on Friday, the UN chief extended his sincere condolences to the families of the victims as well as to the transitional government and the people of Mali.

“The secretary-general strongly condemns the terrorist attack in Bamako, Mali, on September 17.

“He also prays for a speedy recovery to those injured, including one UN guard unit member.

“The UN chief urges the Malian transitional government to ensure that those responsible for this despicable attack are held to account,” the statement added.
