The Edo State Commissioner of Police, Nemi Iwo, said on Saturday the operatives have commenced a mop-up of illegal arms and ammunition ahead of the September 21 governorship election in the state.

Iwo, according to a statement issued on Saturday by the spokesman for the state police command, Moses Yamu, stated at a meeting with the chairmen of political parties and their respective governorship candidates in Benin City.

He said the aim was to ensure security during the election.

The CP appealed to them to prevail on their supporters to shun all forms of violence during the election.

He reassured them that the police and sister security agencies would ensure that all stakeholders, including electoral materials, were protected for a peaceful election.

Iwo solicited information that would assist the police in ensuring an enabling environment for the election.
