The Oyo State Police Command has confirmed the release of Benedict Akika, a prominent Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain, who was kidnapped from his residence by suspected gunmen on September 4, 2024.

Akika, a key ally of Governor Seyi Makinde, was said to have been freed on Wednesday after an intensive manhunt by the police.

According to the command’s spokesperson, Adéwálé Osifeso, Akika’s release was made possible through the efforts of the police’s tactical intelligence team, which combed adjoining forests across three states.

“The politician was freed from his captors after days of intensive manhunt by the command’s tactical, intelligence, and operational assets,” Osifeso said in a statement.

The statement added that Akika is currently undergoing medical examination before being reunited with his family. The police are still working to apprehend the criminal network responsible for the kidnapping.

While appealing to residents to assist the ongoing investigation, the Oyo State Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that the state is not turned into a playground for criminals.

“We urge anyone with information to come forward and help us bring those responsible to justice,” Osifeso said.
