Four commercial computer centre operators in Aba, Abia State, have been remanded in the Nigeria Correctional Service facility, on Wednesday, for allegedly engaging in conspiracy, impersonation, and forgery of Powers of Attorney, a legal document typically prepared by qualified lawyers.

Onuoha Ikechukwu, 40, Daniel Lawrence, 27, Odinaka Onyeforo, 37, and Ndukwe Chukwu, 50, were arraigned before Chief Magistrates’ Court 1 in Aba South Local Government Area.

The court, presided over by His Worship Erinma Maduagwu, heard that the suspects operated at Nos. 2F and 2J Pound Road Extension, Aba, near the court.

Prosecutor Uzoamaka Emmanuel stated that their actions violated Sections 516A(a), 484, and 465 of the Criminal Code Cap 80 Vol. III Laws of Abia State of Nigeria 2005.

Specifically, the defendants were accused of falsely presenting themselves as licensed surveyors and legal practitioners, preparing Deeds of Power of Attorney using stolen letterheads and lawyers’ names.

The charge sheet revealed that Onuoha Ikechukwu was caught with over 70 forged Powers of Attorney bearing names of living and deceased lawyers.

The suspects allegedly stole lawyers’ letterheads and prepared illegal documents for unsuspecting clients using stamps and seals of deceased lawyers.

The defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges. Their lawyers will apply for bail on Friday, October 25. In the meantime, the trial magistrate ordered their remand to the Aba Correctional Service facility.
