In a recent statement, Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi has expressed deep concern over a Federal High Court ruling that halts statutory allocations to Rivers State. The ruling, delivered by Justice Joyce Abdulmalik, deemed Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s recent presentation of the 2024 budget to an incomplete Rivers House of Assembly unconstitutional, further disapproving of the governor’s continued acceptance of federal funds since January.

Obi took to his official X account, urging Nigerians to advocate for the ruling’s reversal, emphasizing its severe implications for the people of Rivers State. He pointed out that cutting off allocations could escalate the hardships already endured by Rivers citizens, potentially leading to premature deaths. “As leaders, our focus should always be on the well-being of the less privileged and vulnerable,” Obi stated, underscoring that leadership decisions must prioritize human welfare over politics.

He continued, “Throughout my political journey, I’ve avoided divisive rhetoric, choosing instead to concentrate on issues affecting the Nigerian people, especially the underprivileged. This decision, however, affects lives in real ways and must be reconsidered.”

Obi’s message calls on all Nigerian leaders to act with empathy, stressing that decisions should create a more inclusive and caring nation. His closing remarks echo a vision of a “new Nigeria,” where governance aligns with the needs and welfare of all citizens, laying the groundwork for a future marked by compassion and progress.
