Nigeria’s bid for a permanent membership on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has received strong support from US President Joe Biden, which is a significant development.

Biden pledged to increase African representation in the UN system during a phone conversation with Nigerian President Bola Tinubu on October 29.

Biden’s resolute stance was emphasized by Nigerian Foreign Affairs Minister Yusuf Tuggar, who offered insights from the half-hour discussion.

Biden’s support was significant because, according to Tuggar, “the president [Biden] made it clear that he did not see why Nigeria should not have a permanent seat at the UN Security Council.”

The conversation takes place in the midst of continuing discussions about Africa’s representation at the UN. According to Tuggar, both leaders discussed the larger picture of permanent seats on the UNSC, with Biden restating America’s commitment to African representation.

He declared that the United States is dedicated to seeing Africa receive two permanent seats.

Nigeria has long called for more representation in international government, and this desire for a permanent seat underscores that desire.

Only three of the 15 members of the UNSC are now from Africa, and the UN General Assembly chooses five non-permanent members each year for two-year terms.

Due to this circumstance, African countries have less sway over important security decisions.

Biden’s support might be a pivotal moment in answering Africa’s demands for fair international representation as the discussion goes on, indicating a possible change in the dynamics of international diplomacy.
